2011 Year end Review of Parties!

I have been a very bad blogger the past 6 months......our computer caught on fire (literally) and I have been networking on other social networking sites AND have had the busiest year EVER filled with exciting events....which you will see in this post! My goal is to blog more frequently in the comming year--but for now I have decided to review my year of parties!!

This first party is a vintage sports party that we had for my son last year, he is really interested in sports and the history of sports so this was the perfect party theme for him!

I always feel bad that my son's birthday is so close to Christmas.....and this year it was so soon after a move and school change....So when the weather warmed up we had a pool party inviting all of his new friends over! We had a Pink Cabana Pool party for my daughter this year, we had a funfilled day for my sweet girl.....this was actually my last blog post ....AND it was featured on Amy Atlas--such an honor--you can see the post here Lilly Pulitzer Inspired Guest Dessert Feature.

This year my husband and I celebrated our 10 year anniverssary! We recently moved back 'home' were we both grew up and met...it has really been an excited year...so we decided to renew our vows! We invited family and our entire wedding party--it was a memorable celebration filled with love!

I had my BIG 40th birthday this year too and decided that I wanted a girl's weekend at the house...my husband took the kids to his parents and set us up with a stretch Hummer limo (I have the best husband in the world!!)--and a week later I went to Italy with my college roomates...needless to say I had an AMAZING birthday and was surrounded with people I love dearly...it really took the edge off of turning 40!

This past Fall I had the opportunity to style a photo shoot for Bird's Party Magazine - Fall 2011, Issue 3 issuu.com....I was thrilled to use Bird's adorable printables and be included in her inspirational online magazine!

In the Fall we had a back -to- school Madeline themed tea party! I really love the non traditional celebrations we have been having....I hope to continue these new traditions in 2012!

I was able to host a baby shower for my good friend in December....we had a champagne brunch and it was a gorgeous Southern California day in DECEMBER so we were able to eat outside. I love the navy and green color combo--We had a whale of a day!

and.....Christmas! We had guests over for Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas day brunch and Christmas dinner! I set up this dessert table and kept refilling it as new guests arrived--I love my new cup cake covers that are personalized with our last name (thank you to my dear friend Debbie)! Well thats a wrap--I look forward to all of the new parties that 2012 will bring!!

Pink Cabana Pool Party

My daughter decided to have a pool party this year for her birthday and I found the most adorable invitations and party decor by Lilly Pulitzer...I love Lilly and planning a preppy pink cabana party was WAY too much fun for this MAMA!!
I referred to my 'Essentially Lilly, a guide to colorful entertaining' book for inspiration. It was definitely a Lilly Pulitzer inspired party!! This monkey is wearing a Lilly dress that my daughter wore when she was a baby!
Going with the Lilly theme we decided to use pink and green throughout the party............
We started off the party with a poolside lunch.....so I decided to make mini cabanas on tooth pics to top our sandwiches........
I placed pink hydrangeas on all of the tables and counter tops--they added such perfect round puffs of pink to the party!!
I made cabana tags out of the Cabanarama file folders by Lilly and put them on everything! Here is our pink dolphin ice sculpture...............

I ordered paper parasol umbrellas and fastened them to the back of the chairs to add some shade and more pink of course!

I scattered flamingos in plants throughout our backyard.................
I love these paper pink convertibles that held the cabana striped napkins and the Ice Cream truck filled with cabana striped ice cream cups!

I actually had a pink convertible back in college--I know, shocking... right??

This fabric is a Lilly Pulitzer design that I used as inspiration for the party-- it has monkeys hanging from chandeliers on it! My daughter is such a great gymnast and she started at a young age managing to climb out of her crib when she was only a year old. We had a chandelier in her bedroom that she always used to stare at and I would say that she was dreaming of hanging from it!! She was also born the year of the monkey--so I decided to use monkeys as decor and I made this candy chandelier out of candy necklaces and rock candy.......

We made this tent last year for my daughter's birthday and I was so happy that we were able to use it again-- this year as a cabana!! I added many pillows and blankets to cover our orange cushions and make our backyard as pink as possible!!

My daughter loves shopping.....and her favorite activity at her party last year was the 'posh puppy boutique' were the kids were able to 'shop' for outfits and dress up their puppy--so I decided to turn the cabana into a poolside gift shop where the girls could pick out snacks, sunglasses, towels and treats!
Barnum's Animal cracker packages are designed by Lilly this year--I almost screamed when I spotted them in the store--so perfect!!

I used my daughter's doll house to create a small cabana to hold the cupcakes.
It was such a gorgeous day and perfect weather for snow cones--the girls loved picking out their own flavors!
I made fondant pink cabana cupcake toppers, this was the first time I have made them myself--I can not wait to continue to explore and create with fondant, the possibilities are endless!

It was hard getting the girls out of the pool....but cake and ice cream are always a motivator!!
We had this wooden ring toss game to play by the pool--I love the colors of the fish they matched so perfectly!

We had pink boxes filled with pink themed books that were perfect for pool side reading and I found these adorable puppets with pink hair that the kids took home along with other party favors from the cabana shop.
We had an amazing day--Happy birthday to my sweet Mandi!!

Prepping for a Pink Cabana Pool Party!

It is getting closer to my daughter's birthday and I am happy to report that we are using the tent again!! I made this tent last year for my daughter's Fancy Nancy party--we used it as a reading tent where the kids read Fancy Nancy books............this year it will serve as a pink cabana because................... we are having a pink cabana pool party!!!
Here are a few sneak peeks of the party decor....I have gone a little cabana crazy with this theme....probably because I love anything pink and preppy!! I have a lot of details that I am excited to share over next couple of weeks--stay tuned!
We are handing out the invites tomorrow with a pink cabana sugar cookie......I have simply gone bananas with pink cabanas!!

The Royal Wedding!!

To say that I am excited about the upcoming Royal Wedding...is an understatement!!
I am in love with the UK, a good friend of mine moved to London many years ago and I was fortunate enough to visit her a couple of times!!
I have always been drawn to all things British.........and when I was ready to register for my china before my wedding I found the most gorgeous place settings by Wedgwood ....named 'Crown' platinum of course! I remember so many friends and family trying to talk me out of the high priced china explaining that I would not get all of the pieces because of the high ticket price.....but I did not care, I had to have it and decided that I would slowly collect it through the years..........I was very lucky that a family friend moved to London and visited the Wedgwood factory outlet often!! She was able to find the remaining pieces of my china for me and brought them back to the US for me!!

Here is the Tea cup and saucer from my place settings.....I just love it and we had to have them out for our 'royal' tea party!!

I have been wearing my Burberry charm watch that has many British inspired charms....it is really getting me in the spirit for the big event!!

We decided it would be fitting to have a tea party and I decided to pull out my travel albums and share my UK visits with my children and discuss all of the history behind this royal event.........
One of my favorite places I went to was The Tower of London which is home to the famous Crown Jewels. I was able to see many of the Crown Jewels that are still used by the royal family today....I can not wait to see what gorgeous jewels the bride wears on her wedding day!!
I visited a jewelry store in the tower of London and purchased these charms with small jewels. I was not married and did not have any children yet-- but I decided to buy a little crown as well to pass on to my own child someday...........I am going to give this crown to my daughter tomorrow so she will always remember this event and her mommy's love for all things royal!!

Easter Fun!

Well I know everyone is done with Easter planning but I thought I would post a few photos of the brunch and egg hunt that we hosted yesterday.................and no--it is not your imagination....both my daughter and her bunny wore two different dresses on Easter, I have no idea where she gets her obsession with shoes and clothes hee hee!

Margarita Cakes for Cinco De Mayo!

I have been experimenting with new desserts and created one that you are sure to love....these strawberry margarita cakes are the perfect for spring and summer treat!
I start off by placing the rim of a margarita glass in a bowl of water and the dip the glass in sugar (to look like salt).........................

I make this sugar/water/strawberry mix ahead of time and place it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.......it consists of a handful of cut up strawberries with a couple tablespoons of sugar and a half cup of water and you can always add a splash of tequila if you prefer...........
I use pound cake and start by cutting off a corner of the cake and placing it at the bottom of the glass.........it is important to have this slice at the bottom to soak up all of the yumminess!!
I then place a layer of the strawberry mixture over the cake........................

I use a smaller circle form (smaller than the rim of the glass) to cut out the upper layers of cake and repeat the process.....................
These can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator a couple of hours before serving......you and your guests will not be disappointed!! Enjoy.....just in time for Cinco de Mayo!

Popcorn Carrots

Well it is official......I have found a way to make marshmallow popcorn balls for every holiday! I basically use the rice crispy treat recipe and substitute the puffed rice with popcorn...............
before adding the popcorn I add in food coloring..........
after adding in the popcorn I mold clumps of the mixture into carrot forms...........the trick is to cover your hands with butter to keep them from sticking.
I then make the green carrot tops with coconut. I take a handful of coconut and place it into a ziplock bag with two drops of green food coloring and shake the bag until all of the coconut is covered green...........then you are ready to enjoy a yummy sticky treat!!!

Spring Break Water Party

We had a Spring Break Water Party today with some of my son's friends from school. We moved recently and bought a house with a pool in southern California so we were ready to celebrate the warm weather with new friends!
We used a lot of of ocean theme decor because we live so close to the beach and Spring is opening season for some fabulous beach weather! My son wanted Tall Ships as the central theme.... We live near a harbor that has classic Tall Ships where the kids attend The Ocean Institute and explore marine life and oceanography.
We made our own ice sculpture using a fish mold and added blue food coloring...... the kids thought it was 'the coolest thing ever"!
Our dessert table was a huge hit, we found a variety of nautical themed and colored candy and I made lobster cookies!!!

The kids had a great time swimming in this gorgeous weather and celebrating their first day of Spring Break!!

Bunny Heart Cookies

The kids loved making shamrock cookies out of hearts and we have been trying to think of different things to make with hearts................we came up with this lovable bunny using four heart shaped cookies.
We first frosted all of the heart cookies with white butter cream frosting......................
We then placed two hearts slightly overlapping to create the front and back bunny feet.................
We used an upright heart for the ears...................................and then placed one final upside down heart on the ears and front legs.....creating the face! We were able to use our left over heart candy from Valentines day for the eyes and nose and we used a marshmallow for the tail!! We heart bunny cookies!!! Perfect for Easter~

Out Like a Lamb..............

Well as they say.......'March came in like a lion and out like a lamb'....we had some windy rainy weather but I am happy to report that it looks like Spring has sprung and I am really ready for it! I am also happy to report that I found the most amazing chocolate rocks by Maggie Lyon Chocolates....this 'Lyon' is here to stay, I love how the rocks look so real and they are sooo delicious!!

Spring Floral Cake

I have been playing around with spring centerpieces....there are so many celebrations during Spring....Easter, Mother's day and we have many birthday's in our family too! I want to try out some new ideas this season so I gathered some flowers from my garden and created a floral cake!
I used floral blocks to create a tower and then placed the flower stems in each section.........
I even used flower candles.....a beautiful cake that is completely fat free!!

Tisket a Tasket a Green and Yellow Basket

A tisket a tasket a green and yellow basket...I wrote a letter to my love.......I start singing this song and the kids run to me--I started a new tradition this year.......I made a green and yellow basket for the seven lucky days before St. Pat's--every day the kids get a green envelope with a lucky note saying something fun that we are going to do or make that day.....and sometimes they get REALLY lucky like their notes last Friday that got them a day off from school to go to Sea World!! This is a fun tradition that I hope to carry on!! Happy St. Pat's day everyone!!

Shamrock Cookies

We made St. Pat's day sugar cookies today.........We made them using three cut out hearts that we pinched together in the center of the cookie around the stem that we made using scrap cookie dough. We glazed the cookies and then added sprinkles and rainbow licorice!! The kids thought it was so cool that the hearts created a shamrock and they loved eating them of course!!

St. Pat's Day Bouquet

I love creating treat bouquets--probably because I would rather have sweets than flowers! I used mini cupcakes to create this green treat bouquet--I placed green jelly beans in a vase to anchor the skewers. I then placed mini cupcakes on the top of a skewer with a large gum drop under the cup cake to keep them from sliding down the skewer......green goodness!!

Happy Groundhog's Day!!

We decided to make some treats for Groundhog's day this year--we are anxious for spring and hoping that the groundhog would bring us some good news today.................
I was so excited when I saw these teddy bear Peeps--I knew instantly that they could turn into perfect little groundhogs...........
We trimmed down the bear's ears , cut the Peep in half and then placed them on cookies surrounded by green coconut!

We also made groundhog cakes....thank goodness we celebrated--because that groundhog predicted an early spring woo hoo! Happy Groundhog's day!

Super Bowl Appetizer Ideas

Here a some appetizer ideas for Super Bowl Sunday! Warning! I am a very creative cook and make up most of my recipes and they vary each time I make them--I have included rough ideas but I do not have actual measurements If you are a cook that needs exact amounts/measurements you may want to run away from this post hee hee!

--with that being said.....here it goes...................

Rice and shrimp stacker: I love making stacker/vertical appetizers! I use a pan that is made for mini cheesecakes where the bottom is removable to assist with getting the stackers out in one piece! I made this stacker by placing rice in the pan/form--packing it in tight and then adding soy beans and topped with shrimp. The trick is to let the stacker set in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours.......

Tomato stacker: There are many options with a tomato stacker! I used tomato, shredded lettuce and goat cheese--this requires a gentle hand but you do not need to use the cheese cake pan or form for this stacker!

Greek Plate: I create a plate with olives, cucumbers, feta cheese, tomatoes, & hummus--I cut up triangle of pita bread for guests to choose their own greek combo!

Bruschetta: I use small slices of toasted bread and place small cut tomatoes mixed with olive oil, fresh garlic, fresh cut up basil and balsamic vinegar--I place the tomato mixture on the toasted bread right before serving.....this is a winner!!

Mini pizzas: I purchase pre-made pizza dough place small amount on a pan and top with a variety of toppings....in this photo: mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese spinach...the possibilities are endless!

Cheese stuffed mushrooms: I first remove the stem from the mushrooms and rinse them. I then use softened cream cheese, fresh garlic, sharp cheddar cheese, and parmesan--I mix all of this together and stuff it in the mushroom. I place the mushrooms in the broiler and remove them when the start to bubble and brown--so easy and soo delicious!!

Shrimp bowls: I start by cutting a lemon in half and then I hollow out the lemon to create my bowls. I use bay shrimp to place inside the bowls and place a tooth pic to be used to eat the shrimp....I also have a bowl of cocktail sauce that can be added to the bowl if desired--these are always a BIG hit!

Stuffing, mashed potato stacker: I use a cheesecake pan to make my stackers--but you can use any form you have available ie, a tomato paste can with both ends cut out. I first spay the pan with cooking spray and then firmly pack in the stuffing followed by the mashed potatoes and then top with cranberries. I place the pan in the refrigerator for at least an hour....and then slide out these yummy little stackers!

Phyllo Stackers: Purchase some phyllo dough and cut in squares....the trick is to butter both sides and be as gentle as possible to avoid breaking the dough. Follow the cooking times on the box. The sky is the limit on what to add in between these stackers. In this photo, I created an herb cream cheese with tomatoes......

Vintage Sports Party

We were finally able to celebrate my son's birthday this past weekend--he has a December birthday, so we usually wait until all of the holiday craziness is over!
My son has been a Yankee fan his whole life and has really been interested in the history of the old Yankee stadium and sports history--so when I asked him if he wanted a vintage sports theme he was ecstatic! I was beyond thrilled because I love anything vintage!! I found this adorable vintage cake bunting at The TomKat Studio and used it as inspiration for decor!
I also used this striped fabric to accent the party--it really reminded me of vintage baseball!

The kids played baseball pinball and soccer foosball for some of the activities..........
I love this vintage baseball sign that I found online!

I found adorable popcorn cases that resembled those you would find at a sporting event and served peanuts in their shells. I found some decor with vintage cup trophies that I used for the water bottles and a photo banner. I took photos of the kids and framed them in sports frames as a keepsake from the party! We all had a great time--this is such a fun theme for boys!!

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is celebrated on Feb 3 this year--and it is the year of the rabbit. My kids love that it is the year of the rabbit because the first night we spent in our new home we woke up to find a wild 'lucky' rabbit sitting at our back door....he was just looking up at us as if he was 'welcoming us into the neighborhood'!
One of the traditions of the Chinese New Year is to reconcile and forget all grudges and sincerely wish peace and happiness to everyone--which I love.
The new year is also celebrated with food and treats...which I really love!!
and another great Chinese New Year tradition is that every family thoroughly clean to wash away ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good upcoming luck---soo I better get cleaning!!

Super Bowl Ideas

Here are a few Super Bowl ideas to help get you ready for the big game that it is around the corner! I bought this stadium cake a few years ago and have used it soo many times, it is great for tailgates, sports parties and of course the Super Bowl! I usually print out the team names and make decor that I place on tooth pics and place them in the cake. I made these shrimp bowls last year by hollowing out lemons and placing small shrimp in the bowls with a football tooth pic to eat them with.

If you are having children in attendance it is always good to have some activities available for them during game time!

I will post some additional appetizer ideas soon....because the Super Bowl is all about the food--right??!!

1st Birthday Party

Here are a few photos of table decor that I put together for a first Birthday party this weekend!
I made a memory book for party guests to write a message to the birthday girl that she can treasure for years to come......
Here are some tutu treat toppers that I made to match to birthday girl.....I made her a fluffy flowery tutu to wear on her big day.

The birthday girl is also wearing a party hat in the shape of a tiara....so I created some favors fit for a princess!

My son is a big Elvis fan, he really loved him when he was younger! He has a pretty big Elvis collection and he even dressed up as Elvis for Halloween one year. I decided to surprise him last year on the Kings birthday to celebrate and we even got a cake.......the baker laughed so hard when I told her about our little celebration!

Winter Wonderland Fun

One of my favorite thing about January is all of the Sales!! I love all of the winter blue decor that goes on sale after Christmas but can still be used for some inside winter fun! I found this great winter castle at Michael's last year and it was 75% off! The kids had a lot of fun putting it together and decorating it!

I also like to stock up on all of the red and green candy--I use the red candy for Valentine's day fun and save the green candy for St. Pat's day! Oh the joys of shopping, I am always on a treasure hunt!

Happy New Year's Kids Celebration

New Years Eve is often reserved for adults to celebrate--but I think it is a great holiday to celebrate with children. I take the opportunity to discuss and recall all of our past years events and plan for the new year. It is also a great opportunity to discuss the calendar and time. We set up a celebration table filled with treats and clocks and I found these great free printables at Love the Day! Christmas Sparkle Brownies

I love ANYTHING mint it is my absolute favorite flavor and I always get excited for all of the Christmas peppermint treats and hot drinks...but even as a mint lover I start to long for other flavors towards the end of December....so we decided to make brownies and top them with crushed up old fashioned candy sticks. They turned out soo good...especially the mix of flavors like the banana flavored candy mixed with the chocolate brownie...yummy--and they even sparkle like beautiful Christmas lights!!

Nutcracker Party

I have seen it twice--once in San Francisco and once in Paris....but going to see it with my little guy is going to be the best show ever--can not wait!!

Here is a fun Christmas treat to make for a part or for a friend, neighbor or teacher.......
We use the rice crispy treat recipe but use pop corn instead of rice crispy cereal and add green food coloring................
We used candy corns for the 'berries'---I like the Jelly Belly brand candy corns, they come in the most vibrant colors and they are delicious.....here is a fun fact for all of you........Did you know that the Jelly Belly company invented the candy corn??....that is why they are the best!!!

Winter Wonderland

Well today is the big game...we have huge USC fans in this house...and the boys are at the USC vs UCLA game as I write this post!! My daughter and I stayed home and decided to surprise them with cupcakes! If USC wins they can come home and celebrate with a cupcake---and if they lose....well-- a cupcake always makes everything better right??

Hot Chocolate stir sticks

I made these marshmallow stir sticks to melt in all of our favorite winter drinks! It is like a little Christmas on a stick and when it melts in your hot drink it is delicious!!
I placed a marshmallow on a stick and then dipped it in melted chocolate followed by crushed candy cane....and then topped it with a red hot and you get.................
Yummy stir sticks for hot chocolate or coffee!!....This would also be a cute addition in gift baskets with mugs and coffee house gift cards!
I made these hot chocolate gifts last year.....I used frosting bags and filled them with hot chocolate mix to look like a cone and then used extra large marshmallows to look like a scoop of ice cream and then added crushed candy canes!! Can you tell that we love hot chocolate in this house?

Ok, so we attempted to make the adorable fruit and veggie turkey on the Martha Stewart website..... clearly our version does not have as much detail as hers--but we had a lot of fun creating it!

A mini Thanksgiving

We take any opportunity to pretend, party and play in this house......one of the things we love to do is decorate my daughter's doll house! We are hosting Thanksgiving this year so we decided to set up a mini turkey meal!

I am creating a dessert table this year....and here is our mini version of it.
Well I guess it is time to stop playing and start getting ready for the real thing--happy turkey prepping!

I put together little turkey coloring kits for the kids on Thanksgiving.....it is always great to have some activities at the table to help the kids sit through a long extended meal---especially after eating such a big meal and the moms and dads need some time to sit back, relax and digest!

My husband, a Veteran, had to work today....while everyone else seemed to have the day off--so we decided to surprise him with cupcakes to show our appreciation!

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

last year we decided to have a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving....we first watched the movie....
and then ate the very famous meal that Snoopy made: toast, pretzel sticks, popcorn, jelly beans and ice cream! This is a fun activity to do on Thanksgiving to keep the kiddos entertained while the real meal is being prepared!

Turkey Cookies

We decided to use some of our Halloween and create some turkey cookies....we had a ton of Tootsie Rolls and decided it would be perfect for our cookies. It is very easy to mold and bend but a little bit sticky......we did not have any Starburst candy left (my sons favorite) but I am pretty sure any type of taffy type candy would work too.........

Halloween Costumes

So every year the beautiful Pottery Barn kids catalogue comes filled with the most adorable overpriced costumes ever! I used two of their costumes as inspiration last year and spent 10.00 total by making the costumes myself--.....because of our recent move, I was convinced that I would have to break down and buy costumes this year.........
but, I found time to make them YAY....and the best part is that I used scrap fabric and embellishments that I already had!...Which gave me a grand total of zero dollars and zero cents woo hoo---that just gives me more money to decorate our new casa!
OK, so this year we used the PB kids donut costume as inspiration and this is what I created--my daughter is soo happy! I just had to have my son dress up as a cop in a donut shop for the pics hee hee--even though he made me promise to tell everyone that he is NOT going to be a police officer....he actually decided he wanted to be a shark (his costume from a couple of years ago)......

Cinderella's Carriage

We decided to decorate a special pumpkin for my daughter........I am going away on a girls trip and will not be home for Halloween and my son is flying up to visit friends from our old neighborhood on Halloween.....so my little princess will be home alone having fun with Daddy!
We decided to make Cinderella's carriage out of a 'Fairy Tale' pumpkin! We collected trinkets from all over the house and used a glue gun to attach them--the scary thing is---I did not have to buy a single item for this project.........the craft supplies are endless in this house!
We used the Topsy Turvy Cinderella doll to accompany our fancy fairy tale pumpkin........Happy pumpkin decorating everyone!!

Jimmy Buffet Inspired Birthday Celebration

We had a family birthday celebration for my husband over the weekend--we just moved into a new house so this was our first big get together! Our new backyard has tropical landscaping and my husband is a huge Jimmy Buffet fan (he is actually at a Jimmy Buffet concert as I write this post!).....so we thought it would be fun to host a Jimmy Buffet inspired BBQ!

Going with our Jimmy Buffet theme...we decided to have 'cheese burgers in paradise'. I got my husband a new grill for his birthday and he was excited to break it in!
I made a tropical veggie tray and a fruit arrangement to have with our 'cheeseburgers in paradise'.

We had a few 'boat drinks'.......

I made pillows out of my husband's old Hawaiian shirts to use as decor on the backyard furniture.

I also used Hawaiian shirts to decorate the fence and we used Hawaiian shirt cloth napkins.....and of course we had a few margaritas in 'Margaritaville'!

My son dressed up as a 'cheeseburger in paradise' for the party he made a great mascot and he also took this close up of the hibiscus behind him in the photo.

Everyone had a great time and we look forward to many more parties in our little backyard paradise!

Mini Ghost Cupcakes

We love decorating the holiday ginger houses....we do them for ALL of the holidays. The kids spend so much time designing their house---such a great rainy day activity. I try to buy them on sale at the end of the season and save them--especially because we do not eat them!

I love my donut maker!....There is a similar model out that makes mini cupcakes--so fun. I love that we can bake and not heat up the whole house...plus it allows me to control the ingredients and make a more healthy/not fried version of the donut....I enjoy baking my own treats....I am really tricky and choose whole wheat flour and sneak in flax seed....see donuts do not have to be too 'scary' to eat!!

Halloween Carnival

Every year we have a Halloween carnival in our backyard! These photos were taken at our party last year--we recently moved and I am not sure if we will be able to do it this year......I use a variety of games that I have collected over the years from previous parties and add a Fall/Halloween spin to them! Fun is had by all at our Halloween Carnival!!
My son performed and shared 'magic tricks' with all of the kids at the party!

We had a tiki toss game where the kids tossed little foam skulls through the tiki's mouth....and a pumpkin toss through the farm....I had little pumpkin erasers and pumpkin bubbles as prizes.
The kids won blood shot eye lolli pops and gum balls for the bulls-eye game!

Well...it has been a long time since my last post. We sold our house and moved and I am happy to say that we are in our new house yay! We still have a lot of setting up to do--in fact I am sitting on the floor as I write this post--note to self: need a new computer desk....

I am really excited to start blogging again, especially with all of the holiday fun to come! I made these cupcakes last year and I can honestly say that I will not miss my old counter top and outdated kitchen....I will now be happily baking and created in a kitchen that was remodeled three months ago--I am ready to get this party started again!!....also, I am busy creating (in my head)...a fab birthday party for my amazing hubby!!

Pirate Party

We had a pirate party a few years ago for my son's birthday! We created this pirate scene in our front yard, the kids loved it so much that we re-create it each year for Halloween!
Here are some photos of the indoor decor and the pirate scene cake! We took photos of the birthday boy on a tall ship in San Diego and used them in his invites that were in a scroll and glass bottle..........
We had so much fun at this party, we went on a treasure hunt led by a real pirate (daddy) and all of the kids dressed up as pirates!

My Summer Colors!!

Ok, so this definitely seems to be a summer trend for me...I love the red coral and turquoise color combo--it just screams summer. I find myself, dressing, decorating and collecting any thing with this color combo. It all started a couple of summers ago when I purchased these adorable Kate Spade shoes--love them! We are in the process of moving and I am really considering decorating a bathroom in these colors...especially because we will live near the beach!

Sharks

We love sharks in this family--I am not sure how it really got started. We watch shows about sharks, play sharks and my son was a shark for Halloween two years in a row--isn't this costume hillarious?!

Sooo when I found this shark cooking project we had to try it out!! They are Hostess Twinkis with a cookie on top (for the fin) then dipped in warm frosting----when they cool you add the details: fruit roll up for the mouth, frosting for the teeth and chocolate chips for the eyes!! Soo fun, the kids loved this project!

Inspiration Board: Sail Boats

We had some friends over today for a little 'sail boat' fun! I found these adorable model sail boats at Michales for $1!!! The kids put them together, painted them and then had a little regatta in the pool! We are moving in a month and we have a sail boat in the San Francisco bay that we are leaving...I am a little sad and hope that we are able to buy a new one in the future--I adore sailing and will really miss sailing under the gorgeous Golden Gate!!

We had a Fancy Nancy birthday Party for my daughter today and had a lot of 'fancy' fun! We made a parfait bar (parfait is fancy for ice cream) . The kids had a lot of fun creating their own fancy ice cream sundaes!

I made this fancy tent (with technical support from my fabulous husband)!
The tent was the perfect place for the kids to sit and read Fancy Nancy books! We bought the birthday girl a pink harp and the kids played beautiful 'fancy' music under the tent........

We had a 'Posh Puppy Boutique' where the kids were able to make their own 'Posh Puppy'....they dressed their puppies in fur, sweaters, tutus and hats--- then they packed their puppies and their clothes in a fancy carrying case.

Mermaid Birthday Celebration

It is my daughter's birthday today and we were supposed to have her party this weekend but decided to do it on Monday because a lot of people were out of town for Father's day weekend. We did a little mermaid family celebration today and she had a blast!
We made a little mermaid grotto out of netting and she played with her mermaids in it all day!

We made mermaid cup cake toppers using clothes pins, fabric and stringy yarn for the mermaid's hair--this was a fun project and they looked too cute on top of the cupcakes!!

Lifeguard Party

We did a lifeguard theme party for my son a couple of years ago at a local amusement park. My husband was a beach lifeguard in Southern California and my son hopes to be one some day!

I made 'life preserver' cup cake toppers using white donuts and fruit leather.
I found these great life guard visors for the kids, it was a great party....especially because they gave us a party room with two coordinators, prepared all of the food and cleaned up the mess.....priceless!!

Egyptian Feast

We went to our son's Egyptian Feast end of the year school party---the have been learning about ancient Egypt.
All of the families dressed up and brought in an Egyptian dish--yummy!! The kids all created Egyptian art and traded them at their Egyptian market. We had such a great time and I am amazed how much these kiddos know about Egypt!

More Dinosaur Fun

My son goes to a charter school where the parents are heavily involved in the school curriculum and all parents spend time working in the classroom--such a wonderful program. The kids studied dinosaurs this year and my son was fascinated with understanding the actual sizes of the dinos.
My husband and I came up with the idea to sketch out a dinosaur and have the kids help us outline the exact dimensions of a dino in the field at school. We picked the largest dinosaur they were learning about--The Brachiosaurus!!
We sketched out the dimensions on graph paper and then created an out line of the dino in the grass using wooden pegs. The kids worked together and connected ribbon to all of the pegs.

The children were amazed at the actual size of the Brachiosaurus!! They had a lot of fun laying down next to the dino and inside his legs and wondering what it would be like to look up at this enormous dinosaur!!

Lemonade Stand

I can not believe that it is June 1---let the fun in the sun begin!!!

A couple of years ago my son decided that he wanted to put together a lemonade stand--he had so much fun planning and implementing his plan. There are so many things he learned in this process---he decided to give all of the proceeds to a charity and he raised almost $ 40.00! He learned a lot of math/money skills, planning and preparation, sales strategies and most importantly the gift of giving!! I hope to do another one this summer!

Memorial Day

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend..........We are back after a stay in Monterey--I am married to a military pilot and we were able to spend the weekend with a fellow military family! We had the opportunity to attend an amazing patriotic event put on by the Navy-- I love giving the kids opportunities to participate in these events and gain a better understanding and respect for all who serve our country!

Hawaii Play

I believe that a lot of a child's processing of a vacation happens after the experience. There is so much to take in during the experience that is important to recall later. We purchased a lei to bring home and remind us of our trip and add to dramatic play.
I found these hand made dolls at a local toy store...my daughter has been using them to sing all of the Hawaiian songs and dances that we learned on our trip!! Aren't they adorable???
We are really big on tradition in our household...my husband and I both vacationed in the the same spot in Kauai as children (funny coincidence) and we bring our children back to the same spot as well...........so I was so excited when I found this retro coloring book that both my husband and I remember having as a child!
The book has a lot of Hawaiian words and traditions in it...too cute, I love the characters!!

Making Leis

I love making our own leis when we visit Hawaii! There are beautiful flowers growing everywhere and it is fun for the kids to collect their own flowers and string them into a beautiful lei!

We always make sure we bring dental floss and a sewing kit.....you can save a lot of money when you make your own and the kids get so excited to wear their lei to a show or luau!

I used orchids in my wedding (my favorite flower) we put them all over the cake and I am now wondering why I have not continued to do this..........it makes such a beautiful statement and there is no reason this trick should be exclusive to wedding cakes! We finally had some free time to go visit our boat and go sailing in San Francisco........our son is old enough now to start helping us sail, he is a natural sailor!
The weather was usual fog....but gorgeous scenery.............doesn't our boat have a great view?? I would love to live on it---but we would be horribly cramped and cold!

Princess and The Frog

I love the idea of a princess and frog party! It is very appealing to both girls and boys---and I have always loved the saying 'you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince'--probably the only truth to fairy tales....(:
Jump over the lilly pad..........I am so drawn to lilly pads--there is something so magical about a beautiful leaf and flower floating in the middle of a pond!

Here is the princess and the frog Topsy Turvy doll--it actually has 3 characters in one doll--the princess flips to a frog and if you kiss the frog you get a prince!

Flex Strings

We created some pictures using flex strings....have you seen these? They are so much fun to use! They are basically wax sticks that hold their shape and you can mold them into various designs--they stick to paper, windows, walls and they do not stain or make a mess! They can be over and over again, providing hours of creative opportunities--love them!!

I have been doing a lot of letter sorting (capitalized verses lower case) with my daughter who is in preschool................
We decided to get out the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom DVD and book.....we are a huge book family........we do not watch a lot of TV or movies.... but I love all of the DVD's that reinforce the books, I really think it helps make letter/word connections.

and of course we had to make our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom treat............we leave for Hawaii in a little over a week so this activity helped us get into the tropical spirit!!

I made this bouquet of chocolate covered strawberries for one of my 'Mommy' friends who deserves a special treat for being such a great mom! I put candy in the bottom of the vase to anchor it down and then filled the vase with edible/candy grass. I placed the strawberries on skewers and then dipped them in melted chocolate topped with flower shaped sprinkles.

Here is a fruit bouquet that I made last spring.........I used flower cookie cutters to make the flowers and then used fresh mint as greenery..............a healthier choice for those moms who may be cutting back on sugar or who are allergic to chocolate like my Mama!

I love this time of year....the birds are everywhere in the garden!
I found these beautiful bird prints with various names of birds....and we have all ready been able to identify a few that hang out in our trees!
The houses are full of seeds and we are ready to do some bird watching.........I just hope we do not get too many...they get really loud in the morning and this mama is not an early bird!

Last Minute Teacher Appreciation Gifts

I made these desk pots for my daughter's preschool teachers in celebration of teacher appreciation week. I found calendars and 'to do' lists/note pads and then glued silk flowers on the top of pencils. I thought the pots would make a cute storage container on their desk and also add some spring decoration to the classroom!

I can not believe that it is almost May! We decided to make a May pole to dance around and celebrate spring! We attached flowers, ribbons and fabric to a wooden ring and then hooked it on our tether ball pole in the backyard....instant spring fun!!

Garden Stepping Stone

I bought a stepping stone kit and we decided to make hand prints in the mold.........I have fond childhood memories of printing my hands in fresh laid patio cement and watching it dry... and then looking at it for years to come. We ended up putting in flagstone for our patio so we do not have any prints of the kids hands (or feet). I like the idea of the stepping stone because we can take it with us when we move!

The kit came with some small stones that resembled fish gravel and were a little too bright in color...........so we purchased some smooth glass stones and added some glitter before it dried.......I love how it turned out.....I think we will make a few more to create a path........ This would also make a great Mother's day gift!

Teacher Appreciation: Pedicure Spa Package

I made my son's teacher a foot spa package for teacher appreciation day next week! I purchased lavender lotion, foot cream, exfoliant and foot therapy salts. I also included a terra cotta pumice stone, massage brushes and some other pedicure tools. I found those very convenient sandals that you latch after you paint your toes (love them!).............

I placed everything in a foot tub....so she is ready to go.....I think every teacher deserves some time off their feet!

Space Robot Party

We made a robot that was attached to a very large remote control car...so he actually moved through our party!
The kids decorated the robot with all kinds of gadgets....including a voice recorder and eye that moved and lit up.

Moon magic.....science fun!

We had this party in the evening so we could go outside and see the stars with a telescope....we also had a mad rocket scientist (Daddy) visit and launch a small rocket....the kids had a blast (literally)!
